The 150th Anniversary Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union: A Historic Event in Uzbekistan.

Today, against a backdrop of instability, complex geopolitical processes, tensions and growing economic crises in various regions of the world, it is important to effectively promote national interests in the international arena through an active foreign policy. Thanks to the active and pragmatic foreign policy of Uzbekistan, which is acquiring a completely new meaning in the current difficult conditions, our country is becoming one of the centres of world politics and the author of global initiatives. The country's parliament is also actively involved in this process. In particular, as a full member of the largest international parliamentary structures, it holds prestigious conferences and puts forward important proposals and initiatives. A striking example of this is the successful holding of the International Parliamentary Forum on the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in Bukhara and the 14th Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament in Tashkent, jointly with the IPU. As is known, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, put forward the initiative to hold the 150th IPU Assembly in Uzbekistan. In Geneva, Switzerland, the Secretary General of the IPU, Martin Chungong, and the Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, Tanzila Narbaeva, signed an agreement to hold the 150th IPU Assembly in 2025 in Uzbekistan. It is worth noting that this authoritative structure, which unites 181 parliaments of the world, holds the meetings of its highest body – the Assembly – in countries with positive experience in parliamentarism and sustainable development. Holding the Assembly for the first time in the Central Asian region, in Uzbekistan, confirms the recognition by the world community of the democratic reforms and efforts to develop parliamentarism, implemented in the country under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. For the first time in our region, such a large-scale parliamentary event will be held, which testifies to the active participation of the Parliament of Uzbekistan in the implementation of the SDGs, improvements in accordance with international standards to the regulatory framework, protection of human rights and promotion of gender equality issues at the parliamentary level, and broad involvement of young people in legislative activities within the framework of the Youth Parliament. Holding the IPU Assembly in our country will allow parliaments to exchange experience on current issues on the international agenda, get acquainted with the activities of the Parliament of Uzbekistan, expand the participation of parliaments in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and consider the possibility of cooperation between parliaments to achieve the SDGs, and enhance interaction in the field of human rights, gender equality, youth empowerment and combating climate change.
